Let’s Talk Recruiting
I am betting that those of you reading this have had “good and bad” bosses. Of course, the internet is now the dominant force in matching candidates on paper with the job requirements. While I appreciate the convenience of having a keyword driven dynamic to help with the decision maker’s time management, I remain very disappointed that this crucial skill has been handed over like any other task. By culling through resumes on your own, you learn how to recognize past success and the ability to read between the lines that can help hire some outstanding long term producers. Regardless of the gaps or red flags, you learn how to recognize that interviewing someone who may not seem like a good fit may just end up being the perfect fit. The truth is that successful people are looking for other successful people to follow. In other words, picking the right boss is more important than picking the right job for many individuals. For this reason, I encourage you to develop your compelling story on how and why you got to where you are today while having the candidate rooting for you along the way. This will put you in the “good boss” category and help you when your subordinate is underperforming and you need to reprimand. Remember that the spouse or significant other is their resident manager and to include them during the onboard process and after to help give perspective to problems that will arise.
